Brussels, 13 June 2018, 09:30-11:00
Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Avenue de l'Yser 11, B-1040 Brussels

Turkey will hold snap presidential and parliamentary elections on 24 June, some 17 months earlier than scheduled. Thereafter Turkey will move from a parliamentary to a presidential system of governance that grants sweeping powers to the new president.

With the stakes so high, in a totally unprecedented move, Turkey's historically fragmented opposition has mobilised and united. Political parties from different backgrounds and ideologies have a common goal - to defeat Erdogan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and restore a parliamentary system. However, this will not be easy. The ongoing state of emergency, new controversial electoral laws and an imbalanced media landscape represent major challenges.

This panel will look at why snap elections were called, what are the key issues and challenges, and who are the key contenders. Speakers will also offer their views on the different scenarios for the outcome and how could it impact both Turkey domestically and externally, including relations with the EU and US.

The European Policy Centre, the European Foundation for Democracy and the Multinational Development Policy Dialogue of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, are jointly organising the breakfast debate "Snap Elections in Turkey: Erdogan reloaded or a step change?" The event will be held in English and under Chatham House Rule. The debate will be structured as follows:
