Consumers and industry alike experience several barriers to shift to renewables and drive the energy transition. This is a multifaceted problem, including lack of access to information among consumers, affordability, grid and market integration, misaligned labour markets and supply chain issues. This session will present these barriers, discuss concrete solutions and where further EU action is needed.

The panel will discuss how investments in self-consumption can shield consumers from volatility in gas and electricity markets, how we could unlock flexibility resources as an alternative to conventional gas and how we can ensure the security of supply, which is worsened by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. At the same time, the session will directly contribute to the political debate on the Fit for 55 package, as well as the newly launched Solar Strategy and the REPowerEU package of the European Commission.

Speakers:
Mechthild Wörsdörfer, Deputy Director-General, Directorate General for Energy, European Commission
Annegret Groebel, President, CEER
Monika De Volder, Senior Energy Advisor, BEUC
Stephen Russell, Director General, ANEC
Walburga Hemetsberger, Chief Executive Officer, SolarPower Europe

Our partners for this panel are CEER, ANEC, and SolarPower Europe.
