The digital sector is currently dominated by a small number of large companies, whose impact on people's lives has significantly expanded. These companies control digital ecosystems comprising numerous products and services, seeking to address the diverse needs of consumers across a wide range of markets. Google, for instance, offers around 70 products on its platform, including popular services like maps and general search, various shopping search engines, cloud services, and artificial intelligence tools. As these digital conglomerates interact with customers within their ecosystems, they directly collect personal data. The wealth of data sources in digital markets allows data intermediaries to segment data along several dimensions, such as demographics, interests, and locations, and then auction them off to potential buyers. This data holds significant value for third-party websites and software applications, enabling the provision of personalized deals or services. The discussion on how conglomerates use the data collected in digital markets is highly relevant to society. It has recently drawn the attention of competition authorities and regulators.

The 2024 Luiss Research Day will bring together academics, practitioners, and enforcers who are at the forefront of the analysis of digital markets across the globe. The distinguished guest of the event will be Jean Tirole, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2014.
