After a record drop in global demand in 2020, natural gas markets experienced strong supply-demand tensions in the first months of 2021. Colder than expected temperatures and tighter supply led to price rallies and spikes, first in northeast Asia in January then in North America in February.

These winter storms have provided some short-term support to natural gas demand, but market fundamentals for 2021 remain fragile. Global gas demand is expected to recover to its 2019 level but with uncertainties regarding the recovery trajectory of fast-growing markets compared with more mature regions, while sectoral demand is subject to a variety of risk factors including slow economic activity rebound and fuel switching.

In this webinar, organised by the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and the Clingendael International Energy Programme (CIEP) in cooperation with the International Energy Agency (IEA), the findings of the IEA Gas Quarterly Report will be presented and discussed. In addition to comments by IEA, CIEP and IAI speakers, on this occasion a speaker from ENI will share the private sector’s perspective on natural gas market developments.
